"So He Won't Break"

Well, now that they've released a new album, I have an excuse to post about them. I found out about The Black Keys in high school, through my American history teacher. At first, it was just "Oh, just another band." But then I get more of their albums. By the time their CD last Magic Potion dropped, I was hooked. Their brand of garage band, grungy blues/folk music is enamoring.

Their newest CD is a cleaner effort than their last, the result of actually being recorded in a studio (one album, Rubber Factory, was done in one day in a garage). They also teamed up with Danger Mouse of Gnarls Barkley fame for the production side of things. But really, having already listened to the album about 7 times through, it's the same dirty sound, same soulful lyrics.

And I like it.

Always buying sneakers? It's the sign of a leader: Poll

Haha, I am validated.

"You Can't Be Me..."

So, by most accounts N.E.R.D. rips the stage when they perform. The Virginia Beach "Rock" group was selected to perform at SXSW this year, and I just so happen to have their set of 11 songs. This was in the "Kicks" post, but I felt like it deserved it's own post. So far, I'm digging the live versions of "Rock Star" and "Spazz". New album from them is also on deck for this year, so look out.

Royal Bangs

I'm on my Alternative/Indie tip a bit harder than I was yesterday, and some people want balance and blah blah blah, so here I am. I found this band through probably my top favorite band's myspace page, The Black Keys. I have every album, and they're all good, but more on them later (today).

Royal Bangs. I don't know, just a random-ass good find. Their music has energy, especially the mosh-like (kinda?) "Brother". So far, my favorite track would have to be "New Scissors", though.

Rock and roll music that beeps and shakes. We must and will use electrical guitars, drum machines, sampling, electrical bass guitar, electrical pianos, personal computers, shakers, 2 many drums, and everything else.

Like a more traditional NERD, they add in electronica elements to some of their music, and it works out well. Head on over to their MySpace and give them a listen.

"I'm Your Son's Teacher."

A guy goes to the supermarket and notices an attractive woman waving
at him.
She says hello.

He’s rather taken aback because he can’t place where
he knows her from.

So he says, ‘Do you know me?’

To which she replies, ‘I think you’re the father of one of my kids.’

Now his mind travels back, and he says, ‘Ohhhhhhhh…aren’t you the stripper from my boy Jamal’s bachelor party- the one I fucked on the pool table with all my buddies cheering me on, while your partner licked whipped cream off my balls???’

She looks into his eyes and says calmly, ‘No, I’m your son’s teacher.

Joke courtesy of the fools over @ NahRight blog. Look that place up, check them out. They're kinda doing the same thing as me.

"Doing Fine"

I'm staying busy at work (until 12AM...), but I just wanted to pop up with something you might not have yet. I originally grabbed this album just for the alternate version of "Homecoming", called "Home" and featuring John Legend instead of Chris Martin. Yes, I like "Home" better, it has the same lyrics from Kanye, but it has a completely different feel to it. Definitely more soulful, and I think it fits well with the subject matter. I read something about a Patti LaBelle sample, but whatever it is, it works.

The rest of the album was gonna be a passover for me, but if you just let it ride, you'll hear some of your favorite lyrics and verses, to either a slightly different beat, or a completely different one. "Self Conscious" is a perfect example, sampling lyrics from "All Falls Down". If you actually listened to "Last Call" from College Dropout, "Wow" makes an appearance here.

Kanye West - Late Orchestration

So, I've been picking up a lot of Kanye the past couple days. Sue me. Late Orchestration is a live album, featuring live performances of songs from two of his studio albums. It was recorded in front of 300 personally invited guests and fans at Abbey Road Studios (the famous Beatles studio) in the United Kingdom on 21 September 2005. Kanye was backed with a 17-piece all-female (Oh ho ho! lol) string orchestra and featured guest appearances by John Legend, Lupe Fiasco, GLC and Consequence.

It's always nice to hear live versions of some of your favorite tracks. It doesn't have all the tracks I would want to hear in this situation (maybe "Family Business", "Hey Mama", "Two Words" and (freaking) "We Major". Ah well, can't get everything you want.

Tracklisting:
1. "Diamonds from Sierra Leone" – 4:08
2. "Touch the Sky" – 4:07
3. "Crack Music" – 2:48
4. "Drive Slow" – 4:34
5. "Through the Wire" – 3:33
6. "Workout Plan" – 2:53
7. "Heard 'Em Say" – 4:10
8. "All Falls Down" – 3:13
9. "Bring Me Down" – 3:21
10. "Gone" – 4:15
11. "Late" – 3:54
12. "Jesus Walks" – 3:14
13. "Gold Digger (AOL Sessions)" (bonus track) – 3:18

"I Got To Jacob With 25 Thou..."

I thought I'd hit you with some stuff I've been running through during the weekend. Yes, I've had "Luchini" stuck in my head longer than the first time you catch your parents doing it. Also, new shit from Wale to hold you over until his major label mixtape release. I honestly haven't checked it out yet, but I'm gonna listen to it right after I finish listening to Janelle Monáe. Yo, somebody else said it best, she's kinda quirky like a female 3-Stacks, but R&B (or as her album calls it, "Classical Wondafunk"). Oh, and she's cute too.

Too bad she's on freaking Bad Boy, watch Puff eff it up. This is her album "The Audition".
