Gordon Gartrell Radio Ep. 4 From GGR

Take On Me

Photobucket

No, there is nothing new on this post as far as music, but I felt it’s only right that I speak on this upcoming project from Detroit’s Zo! and Phonte (of Little Brother). Te recently spoke with DX about the project saying that it’s their way of paying homage to the stuff they grew up listening too. If you aren’t aware Zo! & Tigallo Love the 80’s! is a project that is chalk full of covers to 80’s R&B and pop songs. And to be honest, it’s one of my most anticipated albums of 2008. I had the honor to preview a few tracks during our chill time in MPLS and despite me not knowing a few of the originals (since I’m a real 80’s baby and was too young to remember) the music itself is amazing. Te also said they were very serious with everything, from the vocal side, to the production side, to the final mixing and mastering. And based off what I heard I can’t argue that at all! Be on the lookout for a new leak from the project sometime next week (most likely on the ever-so-dope Gordon Gartrell Radio podcast). Until then, enjoy the three tracks that have been released in the past.

"I Want What I Want"

You may remember dude's name from his feature in Pac Div's "Paper" joint.

If you get the chance to chop it up with TiRon, you’d be wise to give him his due diligence.

His background with, knowledge of, and ear for Hip-Hop gives him tough seating in a diverse Los Angeles scene. He moves seamlessly from underground neck-snapper spots to flyer-laden shows, paying many respects and accruing many a handshake. A supreme hustle.

A Renaissance man, this emcee has lived an a-thousand-and-one-Arabian-nights of a life. Born outside of Chicago and coming up in Los Angeles, TiRon wrote the first chapter of his story with a mixtape that’s been out for a minute, but went vastly overlooked…

Handshakes and Pounds, ladies and gentlemen.

This is why I like going to TSS. I'm gonna give you a little bit of bias, and say my favorites are "P.I.C.K.Y.", "Never Happy" and "If". That's not even all of them. Overall, this thing is solid. How did folks overlook this one the first time around? Guess it got swallowed up in the speed of the blogosphere. Everybody always has to have that new...

Bounce That

This is a Girl Talk post. Girl Talk is one of my favorite artists of ANY genre, period. I think it sucks now that I can't remember where I got my first couple of Greg Gillis' songs, but I remember being in awe of his mash-up ability. Maybe it was just the music nerd in me, that loves to be like, "Ooo, I know where he got that background beat from!" or, "I know that melody!". Whatever it is, it got had fiending for more. I only had maybe two songs from his newest album at the time (Night Ripper), but I ordered the album online on the strength of those songs alone.

I was not disappointed at all, the album is heat rock. I play it regularly to this day. And most times when I listen to it, I play the entire thing. By it's nature, as a mash-up CD with many different song blended together, it's cohesive, but it seems like it's more than that.

All that to say that I've been waiting on a new Girl Talk album, and on Friday he finally delivered. It's a bit different than Night Ripper, but I'm on my third listen, and while it's a bit slower/choppier, I can still jam out to it.

And that's all I need.

Pac Div Signs With Universal

Photobucket

Just got word that Pacific Division signed with Universal yesterday, and man am I relieved.

About a week ago, rumor had it Pac Div were going to be the premier act to sign with Jermaine Dupri’s new TAG Records – a Proctor and Gamble/Island Def Jam effort to meld product with product. When I mentioned the contract on the table, Gotty™ said “I hope they sign with invisible ink.”

While the TAG Body Spray deal seems well intentioned – what with immediate spotlight shine and a hefty signing bonus – the Over/Under is bleak. JD inevitably pops up in his artists’ videos and adds a real weak-sauce glaze to the whole swag, not to mention instant association with the splashy Funkdafied or kiddy Lil’ Bow Wow. When is the last JD project you were really feeling? Because it was probably Kris Kross and you probably only liked them because they were your own age and the radio was fresh at the time.

That aside, had Pac Div signed with TAG, they would forever be known as “the TAG group.” It would be infinitely harder to shake the image of product placement, however great or small, than it will be to get Universal to put out a quality record. And Pac Div got records. It would be a damn shame to have their music lost to the pages of gimmick history.

"Fast Live, I Live"

New music off of the upcoming Re-Up Gang album. No Ab Liva or Sandman on this one, just Pusha T and Malice. This is kinda funny, because I had "Breakfast In Cairo", off of Exclusive Audio Footage, stuck in my head today. If you don't know about EAF, go find out. I might post it.

"Getchoo"

I'm probably the only one that checks for Weezer on a consistent basis around here. To make it even worse, I'm probably the only Weezer fan who likes the "Pinkerton" album. So, this note will most likely get no comments whatsoever.

That said, they have a new album dropping very soon that I'm kinda late on. It's no "Pinkerton", has more of a traditional rock feel, but then again it doesn't. I don't like doing my own statements, but it's true. Anwho, here it is.

Stuff I was gonna post anyway, courtesy of TSS. The pic, well, I just like the chair. It's supposed to be about the relationship between Man and Woman. Think about that, and stare at the pic. Comment if you get it...

Also, congrats to Mr. Obama. They said America wasn't ready, and we still might not be. But as it stands, he’ll take the stage @ the Democratic convention on the 45th anniversary of MLK’s “I Have A Dream” speech.

Let that marinate.
